Immunizations

Nurse prepares vaccine syringe

Meningococcal

Why do I need a meningitis immunization?

Laboratory workers, healthcare workers, pharmacists, and hospital personnel who have potential contact with meningitis bacteria or patients infected with meningitis should be immunized.  Vaccination against meningitis can prevent you from becoming ill with a potentially life-threatening infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.

How am I protected with this vaccine?

Two doses of meningococcal vaccine will provide protection from infection as well as from the serious long-term effects of meningitis.

What should I expect at my appointment?

Meningitis shots are given in the upper arm.  Commonly, people experience soreness or redness at the injection site which lasts for 1-2 days.  More rarely, some people will have a mild fever following meningitis vaccination.
